How to use VMConnect and get access directly to your VMs

VMConnect, which is the name of the application that you use to connect to the console session of a Hyper-V Virtual Machine, has few command line with switches, that I really love :).

VMConnect allows you to specify the name of the Hyper-V server and the name of the VM you want to connect to on the command line. Take a look how I'm connecting to one of my Virtual Computers / Servers on my Hyper-V server:
"C:\Program Files\Hyper-V\vmconnect.exe" W2K8x64-S1 "WinXPSP3-VDI01"

That it! Simple, Isn't it? ;)

Why does "My Application" crash when starting it from a Network Drive/Share?

I've seen a lot of applications that works from local drive and doesn't from Network Drive or Share. When trying to run some of those applications from a network drive/share, you could get an error message like the following:

"Application has generated an exception that could not be handled", or
"Application has encountered a problem and needs to close".

Recently I was requested to make one application working from Network Drive.
When I tested this application, I’ve found that it requires a .NET Framework installed on the computer. But by default, Microsoft .NET Framework disallows running .NET applications from a network drive/share.

To make everybody "Happy", I was needed to do some Security Policy changes. To do that, I've used a Code Access Security Policy Tool (Caspol.exe). In my case Caspol.exe located into:
%WINDIR%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\

So, now let see how we can use Caspol.exe. Let say our application located on SRV-F01 server. SRV-F01 server has a shared folder Apps. Everybody on the network has drive I:\ mapped to the \\SRV-F01\Apps. So, the "magic" command in this case should looks like:
"% WINDIR %\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\caspol" -q -machine -addgroup 1 -url file://I:/* FullTrust -name "I Drive"

That it. Now everybody (who executed a Caspol.exe as previously mentioned) can run the "problematic" application from drive I:\ or directly from \\SRV-F01\Apps.

IP V4 Router Virtual Appliance at Torrents Tracker on ITStuff.ca

I'm happy to let everybody know about a new extention at ITstuff.ca.
Today I installed and configured our own Tracker Server, so from now I can distribute a big applications, tools or programs by using BitTorrent.

As a first example, I'd like to show you a Virtual Appliance that I've build. This is a VMWARE appliance with WinPE 3.0 installed and configured as IP v4 Router.

All Virtualization specialist, who even ones worked with multiple vLans / Networks know about very nice soft router, Vyatta.

But, you don't need to buy cow if you would like to drink a glass of milk :). This is a reason why I've decided to build really simple router. IP V4 Router Virtual Appliance doesn't requesting any configuration. Just turn it all and you will get routing between all network cards. Yes, this is so simple :)...

Here is a link to IP V4 Router Virtual Appliance torrent file.

IPv4Router

I'd like to let everybody know about a new tool in our Downloads section. I'm talking about IPv4Router. IPv4Router enables IP Packet Forwarding (Routing) on all network interfaces (by default this setting disabled).

IPv4Router does pretty same to the well know Registry trick IPEnableRouter, but IPEnableRouter requests reboot server after registry changes. After executing IPv4Router routing starts work without reboot. This is very useful in WinPE environment.
